Chaos in European Airspace

A Dublin-Rome flight was diverted to a French military base after bomb threats, signaling a worrying escalation of threats in European airspace. Authorities now face hybrid attack strategies, a phenomenon that is disrupting air security norms. ⏱️ 1 min read The current escalation takes place against a historical backdrop marked by the rise of unconventional threats. Incidents from 2014, where a commercial flight was diverted in Turkey, already highlighted vulnerabilities in the aviation system. Today, attackers exploit technological flaws and regulatory gaps, often combining cyberattacks with physical sabotage. This evolution reflects a hybrid strategy, where non-state actors seek to disrupt continental stability without being detected. For the Mediterranean, this crisis has direct repercussions. Tunisian authorities, facing regional tensions and migration flows, must strengthen cooperation with the European Union. Air security is becoming a diplomatic tool, with economic and political stakes at play. Trans-Mediterranean flights, in particular, are potential targets, highlighting the need for increased coordination between member states and neighboring countries. The coming weeks are expected to see the adoption of stricter international protocols, particularly on communication between aviation authorities. Advanced detection technologies, such as surveillance drones, could be deployed. ⚡ Key Points ▸ Over 300 bomb threats have been recorded in Europe since 2020, revealing a rise in unconventional threats. ▸ EU member states are aligning on reinforced protocols, but the fragmentation of aviation authorities remains a major obstacle. ▸ The Mediterranean, as a region, is at the heart of these challenges.
