A major money laundering, gold trafficking, and tax evasion network was dismantled by the Economic and Financial Investigations Directorate of El-Gorjani. This operation follows investigations into gold trade supply chains, revealing the involvement of several merchants and owners of jewelry workshops, according to a statement released by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Network members used shell companies and fraudulently manipulated the supply records of several artisans to evade taxes and inject untraceable gold into legal circuits. Over the past six years, the network managed to launder nearly two tons of cast gold, with the proceeds reinvested in real estate projects, land acquisitions, and luxury goods, the DGSN adds.
Thirteen individuals were placed in custody on charges of organized crime, forgery, and money laundering, according to the same source, adding that the operation also resulted in the seizure of over 70 kg of gold and four and a half kilograms of untraceable silver, along with more than 120,000 dinars in liquid cash and nine luxury vehicles, whose value was estimated at approximately 25 million dinars.
